About the Laboratory

Mission and Objectives of the Cognitive Research Laboratory

Our mission is to train students in the field of modern cognitive science and to conduct ground-breaking psychophysiological research, as is done at the world’s best universities. Because of this, our staff is expected to uphold international standards when it comes to the quality and significance of their research. Such an approach allows us to prepare researchers, analysts, and methodologists who are strong, driven, and will be successful in various professional areas.

We proceed from the premise that high-quality cognitive research is only possible when it is conducted in cooperation with various disciplines and by a solidary team.

The most important objectives of our group are:

  • To carry out basic, applied, and multidisciplinary research on the human mind (perception, attention, memory, and thought), as well as on cognitive tasks and how the results of these processes are embodied in actual behaviour
  • To involve HSE instructors and undergraduate and graduate students in the Laboratory’s research, and to use the results of the Lab’s research in HSE’s academic process
  • To prepare new academic programmes and teaching materials as part of HSE’s school of psychology and other related disciplines
  • And our main objective is to internationalize education and research and develop international projects and partnerships

Cognitive Research Laboratory

Empirical research in cognitive psychology has been taking place for quite some time in Russia, though a serious decline was seen at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. Thus far, the field has been lagging considerably compared to the rest of the world (in terms of both quality and quantity), despite the fact that the scientific community has been experiencing a gradual revival. A team of instructors has been carrying out research in the field of psychology within the HSE School of Psychology systematically since 2005. These instructors were the driving force behind the Laboratory’s creation: Igor Utochkin, Sergey Yagolkovskiy, and Yulia Stakina. Since the research group first began, HSE staff has been joined by several colleagues from other institutions that have been working in the field of cognitive research for many years: Vladimir Spiridonov, Maria Falikman, Alexey Kotov, Dmitry Lyusin, and Victoria Ovsyannikova.

On October 26, 2012, the HSE Academic Council decided to create a Cognitive Research Laboratory as part of the HSE School of Psychology. At the present time, the group is carrying out research for the project ‘Psychological Mechanisms of Solving Human Cognitive Tasks.’ The Cognitive Research Laboratory consists of 18 people, of which nine are researchers and nine – research interns.
